ABOUT OLIVE HNATIUK...HER BIOGRAPHY...
Olive Hnatiuk – Photographer and Artist
Becoming an “Artist” is a long process. I started with a pencil as a small child.
At school there were crayons and a blank sheet of paper to create one's own
stick people and box houses with little round trees. Later came dimension,
perspective, more and better pencils, watercolour and paints and a variety of
different paper and canvas. After high school came art school and the
realization that I would be one of those starving artists. With a change of
direction, I earned a reasonably good living that allowed me to do the creative
art work that I enjoyed in my leisure time.
I added a camera to keep that vast number of inspirational images recorded
for later use in paintings. And, furthermore, I became a fairly good
photographer to boot.
The photograph suggested that nature is not static and painting should not
be either. Nature and people come in varieties; not plain vanilla. Colour;
bright and beautiful for all seasons appeal to my eye. The colours change
with the seasons: for winter pastel added to white captures the coldness of
our landscape, for summer the hot brightness of the sun, muted colours
appear in spring and autumn shows off the gold, copper and other metallic
colours we all love so much. Art and painting have taught me to see
everything differently and to try to see what more is surrounds me.
I consider that I am still a developing artist. In my latest series of paintings
I have tried to produce dimension. Then what happens is that the lighting
under different conditions adds its own dimension. The raised effect attracts
your attention at you view it from different angles. Shadows play against
each other. This is my new way of viewing the paintings. The subjects are
simple, but taken from life around me.
