Millard Vance Barteaux ( AKA Bart ) was born in Amherst Nova Scotia in 1938 & grew up in Advocate Harbour.
His parents were lighthouse keepers on the Advocate & Cape d'Or Lights for 38 years. He has written a book, “Our Lighthouse Lifetime” about the lighthouses, which he has published on Amazon Kindle. The book can be downloaded to your computer, Ipad or any tablet.
He came to Gimli Manitoba with the R.C.A.F in 1960 and still lives there with his wife Erika. His four children all live in Winnipeg along with five Grand people and one great grand boy. You might remember Bart, when as a “Recorded Music Man,” Circa 1967 to 1988. He played for many weddings, fall suppers and dances in this area. Bart has been painting watercolours as an amateur for the last 40 years.
In 1994 he opened a restaurant in Gimli. He hung one Church painting in the dining room. Then people started saying “where is my Church.”? This started a quest of finding Churches and bringing them back from our past. They all hung in the restaurant until 2002 when he sold his business. The display covers all the Churches on the Interlake highway’s # 6, 7, 8 and 9, from Winnipeg to Fisher River. He was VERY happy to donate the complete collection of 220 paintings to the Arborg Heritage Museum. He feels the Churches are an important part of the real history of our Interlake. Each Chapel has a personal connection to someone’s family. Bart has also made art cards of many of Gimli and Winnipeg Beach landmarks. Many of these buildings are now gone. His Lighthouse upbringing led him to paint all the lighthouses in Manitoba (12). They also hang in the Arborg Heritage Village Hall. All of his other Manitoba paintings can be found on his web site.
