Leo is a self-taught artist whose creative journey began with years spent by the beach, where watercolour pencils and ink became the first tools for exploring a growing love of art. Leo’s artistic journey began early sketching as a child. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, Leo created colouring books, comic books and children’s books. These early creations became some of the first pieces to be displayed. Recognition followed through magazine features, newspaper photographs, press releases, public announcements and special events. In 1990, while attending Banff School of Management Arts Program, Leo realized just how strongly she was drawn to the arts. That experience sparked the desire to pursue art more seriously and continue developing a creative voice. Inspired by surroundings and travel, the subject matter ranges from feathers and shells to fish, cacti, parrots and pineapples. Watercolour became a particular passion, influenced by Florida artist Ellen Negley. An interest in perspective and curvilinear art eventually evolved into a more whimsical and playful approach. Fluid, imaginative and often storytelling in nature, the paintings invite viewers to look a little closer. Beach scenes tucked inside fish tails, playful characters and unexpected combinations bring a sense of fun and curiosity to each piece. Her artwork can now be found throughout North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden and South America. Always curious and eager to learn, Leo continues exploring new techniques and finding fresh ways to bring ideas to life. The completed PiRats and Clams watercolour series combines a love of beaches, imagination and storytelling with a playful cast of seaside characters. The next chapter is Beachology, a larger project planned as a collection of 50 paintings paired with inspirational words. A new card deck is also in development, extending the playful storytelling into another format. From early colouring books and children's stories to watercolour, curvilinear art and whimsical beach scenes, the creative journey continues—one playful idea at a time.
